INTRODUCTION

Peking University First Hospital (also called “Beida” Hospital) is a large comprehensive tertiary hospital integrating medical services with teaching, research and preventive medicine. It lies in the old imperial city, the very center of Beijing. It is the closest hospital to Zhongnanhai and one of the bases for treating high-ranking government officials and senior scholars.

Founded in 1915, Beida Hospital is the first state-owned hospital and the first-batch clinical medical school. It was initially the affiliated clinic of Beijing Medical School approved by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China. In 1946, it became a part of Peking University (also called Beida) and was renamed Beida Hospital. It didn’t get current name Peking University First Hospital until the year 2000 when Beijing Medical University and Peking University integrated after several separation and combination. In 2008, it became Central Government Designated Hospital.

In the past century, our hospital established the first Pediatrics Teaching and Research Office (1929), the first Urology Department (1946), the first Cardiovascular Ward in general hospital (1950s), and the major of Nephrology (1950) and Pediatric Neurology (1950s) in China. We are also in the leading position among domestic colleagues on the performance of intravenous anesthesia (1951), surgical treatment of congenital heart diseases (1950s), kidney transplantation (1960), artificial crystal embedding (1983), coronary intervention (1986), thoracoscope operation (1992) , self-blood callback (1997) and mini-incision lung transplantation (2003) and so on. Therefore, Peking University First Hospital has contributed and is contributing its own efforts to Chinese medical industry.

Peking University First Hospital has 35 clinical departments, 11 technological departments, 1 research department, totally 60 wards and 1835 available beds. Every year, over 2.92 million outpatients and emergency cases are treated, with over 98,000 patients discharged and nearly 38,000 operating cases. The average hospital length of stay is 6.54 days. The hospital has nearly 3600 full time employees, including nearly 260 with a professional title of professor equivalent, over 350 with a professional title of associate professor equivalent. Prof. GuoYinglu of Urology Department was honored as an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999.

Our hospital enjoys a reputation of complete disciplines and high-leveled general diagnosis and treatment. During 2010 and 2013, totally 19 specialties of our hospital were admitted in the National Clinical Key Specialty Construction Program (18 key specialties and 1 key specialty lab). The hospital has several peak and plateau disciplines, including 11 National Key Disciplines, 3 Key Disciplines of Beijing Municipality, 2 ministerial Key Labs, 5 Key Labs of Beijing. In addition, the hospital has the National Drug Clinical Trial Institution with 25 specialties and 1 phase I laboratory. As a Class A insurance hospital, we are providing 20 million Beijing citizens who are enjoying basic medical insurance with medical security. At the same time, the hospital is responsible for the free medical care of 60,000 persons and the health care of one eighth of the senior government officials. Among all the outpatients of our hospitals, one third of them are patients with stubborn diseases coming from all over the country.

As Peking University’s affiliated hospital who has the longest history, in the last 40 years we have cultivated nearly 3100 undergraduate students, nearly 600 8-year doctoral students, and over 3400 graduate students. We have enrolled, as the minicipal reciency training base, over 2500 resident doctors in last 10 years. In addition, our hospital annually undertakes 90 national CME projects and 8 national and municipal examination programs, with over 1000 doctors from more than 200 hospitals all over the country receiving our training courses.

Peking University First Hospital has been holding the leading position for years in scientific research in China. In the recent ten years, the hospital was totally awarded more than 70 research prizes by the national, ministry, Beijing municipality and Peking University, including National Science and Technology Award, Higher Education Institution Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award by Ministry of Education and Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award. The number of projects acquired was over 2300 from various levels, and the funds reached nearly 1080 million RMB. In the recent ten years, over 14000 papers were published. The number of SCI cited papers was 3400, among them more than 20 papers were published on the top medical journals with IF more than 30, such as New Engl J Med, Lancet, JAMA. These articles are based on several large multicenter clinical trials, and a number of research results were quoted by international guidelines.

Peking University First Hospital has over 100 years’ history and cultural heritage.
